After installing the updates, getting error “Cannot connect to the configuration database” (KB951746) (KB953230)

Problem Description:

——————————

–installed an update KB951746 or KB953230

–When ever trying to open central administration page for WSS 3.0 getting Error: “Cannot connect to the configuration database”

SYMPTOMS:

—————–

–When you will open your database server using SQL Server Studio Management, you find there is no plus (+) sign in the left hand side of the database

–As soon as you will right click or choose any of the database property you will get a SQL error

ERROR MESSAGE:

————————–

–“Cannot connect to the configuration database”

— “FCB::Open: Operating system error 5(Access is denied.)”

CAUSE:

———–

–Unknown (Might be due to the update KB951746, KB953230) http://support.microsoft.com/kb/951746/en-us ; http://support.microsoft.com/kb/953230/en-us
RESOLUTION:

——————–

Method 1:

========

–Locate the “Data” folder of the SQL Server database where the problem database is stored like

C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\Data

C:\WINDOWS\SYSMSI\SSEE\MSSQL.2005\MSSQ\Data

–Right click on the folder called “Data” and go to “Properties”

–Go to “Security” tab and add “Everyone” & “Network Service”

–Give them “Full Control” rights

–Restart the SQL services from services.msc

Method 2:

=======

–Check who is the local administrator on your SQL server database

–You can check it by executing a small command in SQL query

Select * from sys.sysdatabases

Use <database name>

Select suser_sname()

–Make sure the local user have complete rights and he is a locally administrator

–Open “SQL Server Configuration Manager”

–In the left hand pane of the windows look for “SQL Server 2005 Services”

–On the right hand side of the windows look for “SQL Server (Instance Name)”

–Right click on the “Instance” and go to “Log On” tab

–You will find that it should be running under “NETWORK SERVICE” or “specific user”

— Changed the “service account” to “Local System” account

–Stop and Start the Service

–close the SQL Server Studio Management and reopen it, you should see the config database attached and operational
